OUR STORY

Foundations of Excellence

The combined legacy of EDRO and Sturdell spans over six decades of innovation, craftsmanship, and customer‑focused service.

EDRO began in 1961, when Roy Henn and his sons founded the company with a clear objective: produce the finest custom mold bases in the plastics industry. With a dedication to precision and a team of highly skilled craftsmen, EDRO quickly became known across California—and later nationwide—for superior quality and technical expertise.

Sturdell was established in 1986 to serve the specialty steel plate market with enhanced “Value Added Services” for the mold plate and stamping die industries. With a clear focus on precision machining and customer satisfaction, Sturdell quickly gained recognition as a leader in steel processing and machining capabilities across North America.

Innovation That Moves the Industry Forward

Both companies built their reputations on their willingness to invest early in advanced technology.

EDRO was among the first in the industry to implement CNC equipment and palletized manufacturing systems, laying the foundation for decades of leadership in precision machining and mold base technology. Their pursuit of improved tooling materials led to the creation of EDRO Specialty Steels in 1985, and ultimately the development of RoyAlloy®, a breakthrough stainless steel for mold base tooling introduced in 1997.

Sturdell, driven by a commitment to efficiency and quality, expanded its offering to include Blanchard Grinding, Precision Surface Grinding, CNC Milling and Squaring, Rough Pocketing, Duplex Milling, and Gun Drilling—providing complete machining solutions under one roof.

Growth, Expansion & Continuous Improvement

Over the years, EDRO expanded beyond mold bases and tooling materials, becoming the exclusive U.S. distributor for Böhler tool steels and adding non‑ferrous materials such as MoldMAX® copper alloys and QC‑10® aluminum. EDRO further grew its portfolio with PVD coatings through its eifeler facility and added an aerospace precision manufacturing division.

Sturdell continued to enhance its steel processing capabilities, earning a strong reputation for accuracy, reliability, and service. The company grew by continuously adopting new machining technologies and emphasizing quality at every step.
